Tiger Group’s Remarketing Services division has announced the creation of GearXpres, an auction marketplace dedicated to offering professional quality broadcast, film and A/V equipment under the direction of industry veteran Chris Thompson.
GearXpres kicks off on June 30 with an online auction of factory refurbished, new, and open box professional equipment, including over $3 million of Sony gear, as well as equipment from Avid, Nvidia, HP, AJA, Cine-Tel, Apple, Panasonic, Newtek, and JVC. Up for sale are digital cinema and broadcast cameras, field and studio decks, wireless mic systems, security systems, teleconference, projection screens, monitors and more. Many of the Sony products—purchased directly from the manufacturer—will be in-box with warranties.
Thompson, who will oversee the auction, joins Tiger Group with more than 30 years of senior executive experience in broadcast and film equipment rentals and sales. He has worked with companies like Avid Technologies and Sony to introduce three of the most widely used broadcast acquisition technologies in the world.
Thompson served as president and CEO of WVI from 1999 to 2007, building it into the largest production and post-production rental company in the country. In March 2007, he led the acquisition of WVI by Telecorps Holdings, Inc., and was named Telecorps’ president and CEO. Thompson holds a Bachelor’s degree in Cinema from the University of Southern California, and has done masterwork and lecturing in cinema at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.
“GearXpres is a marketplace to connect purchasers with manufacturers, rental companies and anyone else with excess inventory,” he said. “We will hold up to six auctions each year, aggregating excess inventory—including production, post production and A/V gear—from a variety of sources.”
