Womble Bond Dickinson announced that Ryan Thompson has joined the firm’s New York office as an of counsel in the Finance, Bankruptcy, and Restructuring group. Thompson concentrates his practice on equipment finance, commercial lending, floorplan finance, asset-based lending, and creditors’ rights. He has over a decade of experience that spans outside and in-house counsel roles, giving him valuable insight into the operational and cultural mores of financial institutions.
Thompson joins Womble from one of the country’s largest diversified financial services institutions, where he was lead counsel for the dealer floorplan business, aviation finance, and commercial and corporate banking in the Northeast. He was also the legal department’s expert on Article 9 and Article 2A issues under the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), inventory finance, leasing, municipal lease finance, and motor vehicle titling law issues.
Earlier in his career, Thompson served as legal counsel for the U.S. subsidiary of a European bank. In that role, he supported the vendor finance business and gained working knowledge of how a foreign financial institution operates in the U.S.
“Ryan’s extensive experience serving in senior legal roles at financial services institutions adds meaningful depth to – among other areas – our equipment finance practice and will be a strong asset for our clients,” said Taber Cathcart, Finance, Bankruptcy, and Restructuring Practice Group Leader.
Thompson earned a B.A. in political science and history from Hillsdale College and a J.D. from Villanova University School of Law.
This addition reflects continued momentum for Womble’s New York office. Since 2023, it has welcomed over a dozen attorneys, including high-profile corporate partner Tracy Bacigalupo, bankruptcy partner trio Edward Schnitzer, David Banker, and Wojciech Jung, financial services partner Louis Froelich, and international capital markets partner David Contreiras Tyler.
