According to the National Private Truck Council’s 2011 Annual Benchmarking Survey released in August 2011, 42.5% of the NPTC member companies responding to the survey reported leasing the majority of their equipment. This percentage was down from the 50% reported that leasing equipment in 2010, but was an improvement from 37% reported in 2009.
The survey also indicated 42.5% reported owning equipment which reflected a 3% increase over 2010 survey results. The remaining 15% reported a combination of both leasing and ownership versus 9% reporting a combination in 2010 and 20% in 2009.
According to this extensive and exclusive study, by total vehicle count, 36% of Class 8 equipment is leased while 66% is owned which indicates larger fleets are using ownership as an equipment acquisition strategy.
